“So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ.” Colossians 1:28 NLT
God has given us a dedicated and unified team committed to serving the body of Christ. We all have different strengths and different backgrounds. We believe this is a plus. We invite you to read our stories.
Nathan Hogan (Senior Pastor)
For more information about our Senior Pastor visit the “Our Pastor” page.
Bob Benthin (Pastoral Care Pastor)
Bob has been our pastoral care pastor since 2002, when he was licensed by our church. With the loving shepherd’s heart God has gifted him with, he desires to reach out to the needy, the hurting, and the less fortunate in our community to offer comfort and encouragement. He also oversees our ministry to the elderly, faithfully serving our senior citizens with the grace of God. Bob enjoys spending time with his wife, Annette, going on walks, and taking care of his grandchildren. Here at Lake Murray, you’ll always find Bob greeting you as you walk through our foyer; he’s usually the first smiling face you see on Sunday mornings!
Marttell Sánchez Cabrero (Youth Pastor)
Marttell (also known as Marty) has been a part of our pastoral staff since 2013. He’s a local San Diegan and a veteran of the US Air Force, and he is married to Sandra, his wife of 12+ years. For formal theological training, Marttell attended Southern California Seminary, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies (2012) and a Master of Arts in Christian Ministry (2017). His credentialing includes a license for ministry from our denomination, the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA). On his free time, Marttell enjoys going on dates with his wife, playing soccer with their two young boys, going on runs with Charlie (their German Shepherd Dog), having family movie nights, having friends over, eating plain vanilla ice cream, and drinking pour-over coffee. Sorry Starbucks, he prefers local coffee shops. You can usually catch him at Brew Coffee Spot, his favorite coffee shop right here in La Mesa. Track him down when you visit; he’d love to meet you!
Edwardo Silva (Associate Pastor of Spanish Ministries)
Edwardo and his wife, Gloria—along with their three children—joined the Lake Murray family in 2013, when our ministry to the Spanish-speaking community was born. From the start, Edwardo has been a pillar in our Hispanic ministry. He has a passion for the Word of God, making him a great teacher and expositor of the Bible. He graduated from San Diego Christian College in 2014 with a B.A. in Christian Ministries, and in 2016 he officially became our Associate Pastor of Spanish Ministries. Edwardo enjoys watching football and grilling out. He also loves inviting people over to his home for carne asada and pollo asado, and you’ll often find him manning the grill at church-wide events.
Sue Waugh (Administrator and Children’s Ministry Director)
Sue has been faithfully and lovingly directing our children’s ministry since 2001. On top of this, she’s also been managing the church office and supporting our pastors with her administrative gifts for many years. If you’ve ever called our church office by phone, you would have been greeted by her sweet voice! She and her husband, Mike, have been blessed with four adult children (all of whom were raised in this church). She enjoys spending time with her family, having picnics at the beach with her husband, and drinking tea.
Brian Neynaber (Music Director)
Brian has been leading the worship ministry of our church since 2013. He has a degree in business management from San Diego State University, a major which helps him in his role of leading and developing the music ministry team. Brian and his wife, Bethany, are local San Diegans, too, so when he’s not playing music, you’ll frequently find him and Bethany hiking through San Diego’s beautiful trails, playing tennis, or riding their mountain bikes. He is passionate about worship, and every week he looks forward to joining with the church in the worship of our Lord through music.
